The 876-acre Cole Hill State Forest is located in the town of Berne in Albany County. Cole Hill and much of the surrounding areas were made up of the Van Rensselaer manor called Rensselaerwyck. Much of the estate was broken up in the early 19th century after tenants were tired of paying perpetual leases, leading to the Anti-Rent War. Cole Hill State Forest is managed by the multiple-use concept. Foresters plan complementary uses such as habitat diversity, recreation, water, wildlife, wood products and natural beauty so as to promote a healthy and useful forest. Recreational opportunities include hiking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, hunting, fishing, trapping and wildlife viewing.

Hi! First, I must say; GREAT PICTURES!
I was in Cole Hill Forest earlier today looking for somewhere to camp when the weather gets nicer. I parked at the first lot on Cole Hill Road and walked to the water/small bridge area- went about a quarter mile to the left and right and didn’t really find anywhere.
Where abouts is this area?
Im fairly new to the area, I grew up next to the Swancott Mill Forest and I’m trying to find a place in the albany area that reminds me of home.
Any info you can give me is greatly appreciated!
Try off of Irish Hill Road. Park at the Gravel Pit. Walk back along the old wood road, down the hill to the campsite. Or from Cole Hill Road (CR 2) parking area, walk along the gravel loop road — upper part, and hike back. There is a fire pit and grassy area, about 200 feet from the road.
